Before I started my teaching internship, I had a lot of questions in my head, such as, "Can I do this? ", or "Would I be a good teacher?" "Can I provide the learning that my students need?" I couldn't help but be worried. Yet, I had a strong conviction that I was supposed to educate and make a difference in the lives of children.
I can still recall the first week of my internship, I had a lot of breakdowns. I am still unfamiliar with the things and activities that were being done inside the classroom. I almost forgot how to make a lesson plan but fortunately, my first-ever lesson plan turned out great. There were just a few errors and revisions. Hence, over time, I learned a lot from my Cooperating Teacher. The time came when I had no revisions to my lesson plan. I became accustomed to teaching, I developed some strategies, I noticed improvements, and, most importantly, my love for teaching grew.
On the other hand, I encountered several problems throughout this in-campus internship. First, the discipline of the students. Since I first taught the primary grade, it was quite difficult to restrain them from being noisy and playful. Some of the students kept on minding their own business even though I am teaching in front. There was a time that I had to raise my voice just to catch their attention. Second, students who do not work on the activities. Few students need guidance, they only work when I approached them. Some students need a constant reminders to submit their outputs. Third, internet connection during our online class. I was worried when I took a virtual class for a week because I might lose the internet connection. I am nervous that I might leave my class in the middle of my discussion.
My teaching in a virtual class is also quite challenging for me because there were students who kept minding their own business. As I noticed during my teaching in online classes, some students kept their microphones unmuted which causes an interruption. Thus, all of my problems encountered fell into classroom management.
Meanwhile, the aforementioned problems challenged me to think and do more. With the help of my cooperating teacher, I was able to generate new ideas, strategies, and techniques and applied on my teaching session. From then, I always started my class with an introduction to my classroom rules. I ensured that my students were well-guided throughout the class period. I integrated the use of different positive reinforcement. I always acknowledge their efforts in doing their activities or simply reciting during my discussion. I sometimes infused games into my discussion which primary grades enjoyed. They did not notice that they were learning as they play the game.
Due to this, I realized that to get students to actively participate in the class, I must have engaging and interesting instructional material. It is essential to involve the students in the discussion since this will help them remember what was being discussed. To evaluate the student's learnings, I realized that I needed to have an activity or performance task that would let the students apply what they had learned. Teachers must never stop motivating and inspiring students to do their best.
Moreover, teaching is what teachers do; learning is what students do. It made me realize that this profession I am taking is not easy. I need to have a long understanding and unending patience with my students. I witnessed how the different teaching strategies and methods keep a high level of motivation, interest, and engagement in the classroom. Incorporating technology into the teaching and learning process is a very effective method. As we all know, rules alone won't be enough to keep students' attention and cooperation monitored because they can still be distracted. Although there are issues and challenges associated with using technology in the classroom, it has been proven to be successful. Another method is using hands-on activities in the classroom. Through this, I was able to effectively assess my students' learning and evaluate their level of understanding.
In addition, teaching and learning are inseparable. It is essential to provide a supportive and comfortable environment in the classroom. I learned that I must build a strong relationship with my students to have the best learning experience. All topics and examples that I discussed were culturally and developmentally appropriate and relevant in real-life applications. I also anticipated a broad range of diversity in the classroom, including differences in sexual orientation, religion, and color. The design of pair and group exercises is also important rather than having class discussions all the time. Thus, students can acquire unconventional knowledge and hone their interpersonal communication skills. Without a doubt, this profession is all about shaping the future of our country.
As I finished my in-campus internship, I realized a lot of things. It made me realize that it is essential to have an environment that is conducive to learning. All facilities and equipment must be present and available for the students. Those facilities will help expand the knowledge of the students. Teacher plays a vital role in the learning process of the students. It is important that a teacher possessed all the personal qualities of a teacher. She must be determined, knowledgeable, dignified, humble, cooperative, and a lot more.
Overall, this in-campus internship became an eye-opener to me of what awaits me in the field of education. It made me aware of what I needed to do and prepare as I enter my chosen career. I believe that this profession is not just a profession but also a passion. I have to be fully committed to my profession and to my future students to be the best academic, personal, and ethical role models I can be.
